BATTLE OF THE MINDS
Mrs. Beth McKeown, Advisor

Battle of the Minds is made up of seventh and eighth grade students who enjoy playing Jeopardy. The students are placed into teams of four. They compete against one another in practice games that are held once a week after school. We compete against other schools. In past competitions the teams have come from Allamuchy, Hackettstown Middle School, Independence, Phillipsburg, St. Mary’s and Lopatcong. We also compete internationally in the Knowledge Master Open. This competition takes place on a computer, with points being given for speed and accuracy. The students learn to work cooperatively with one another, develop the ability to recall facts quickly and enlarge their base of general information.

BLUE STREAKS HIGHLIGHTS(Journalism Club)
Mrs. Susan DeYoung/Mrs. Nancy Terhune, Advisors

The middle school newspaper meets after school on Tuesdays to organize and create a hard copy newspaper. The staff is responsible for coordinating and assisting the "reporters" with their assignments. Journalistic integrity, fact versus rumor, and newspaper layout will be an integral part of this learning experience. The reporters will be responsible for writing editorials, sports articles, entertainment/trivia, advertisements, significant dates, movie and book reviews as well as creative writing. Positions on the newspaper staff are limited, so students will be required to fill out an application to join this new and exciting club.

BUILDERS CLUB
Mrs. Sherry Anderson, Advisor

Builders Club is a coeducational service organization that provides young people in middle school the opportunity to help others, serve their school and community, and build a positive future for themselves. These young students develop and carry out service projects for their school and community. They may also participate in fund-raising projects and use the money earned to support a local charity or school concern. The Builders Club elects its own officers, holds regular meetings and establishes its own committees. Projects are suggested by the members, advisor, and school staff, and they are approved by the administration and school board.

Builders Club is the youngest member of the Kiwanis International family which also includes Key Club, a service organization for high school students, and Circle K, the collegiate level service organization. Kiwanis International has existed for more than 75 years and has dedicated itself to service in many communities. Two Builders Club members will attend a Kiwanis Club luncheon every Tuesday throughout the school year. Traditionally, Builders Club holds an annual fund raiser in September and October to help alleviate the expense of the yearbook for middle school students. Builders Club sponsors the Valentine’s Day dance. Money earned from these projects is used for community or school service. Builders Club has been involved with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Warren County and will continue to interact with them. During the month of October, members sponsor a school wide food drive to help our local Food Pantry. Also, Builders Club members fill approximately 1200 eggs with candy for the Washington Borough Recreation Committee's Easter Egg Hunt. Builders Club members act as guides for Back-To-School Night.

Finally, the objectives of the Builders Club are...
--To provide opportunities for working together in service to school and community
--To develop leadership potential
--To foster development of a strong and moral character
--To encourage loyalty to school, community and nation.

The Builders Club motto, like that of Kiwanis International, is “We Build.”

CHESS CLUB
Mrs. Geri McKelvey, Advisor

The Warren Hills Middle School Chess Club is made up of any seventh or eighth grade student interested in playing or learning the game of chess. The club meets once a week all year long. Students are exposed to the strategies of the chess masters. They also have the time to develop their own strategies. Competition is at the intramural level against fellow club members. Participants are given instruction by the advisor, and also from one another. The atmosphere is very informal and relaxing. The purpose of the club is to develop an interest in chess as well as hone existing skills. It is also hoped that after two years in the club, the students will have the skills necessary to compete on the varsity chess team at the high school. The club members will also have a game they can take into their adulthood, and use it as a leisure time activity.

CHORUS CLUB / HONOR CHOIR
Mr. Daniel Brown, Advisor

The Middle School Honor Choir will be the select choir, for which students must audition. The choir will meet on Tuesdays from 7:00-7:30am in the music room. The choir will meet weekly for rehearsal and will participate in concerts and competitions throughout the year. Students do not need to be in chorus in order to audition for Honor Choir. Choristers who are accepted into the honor choir will participate in fundraising to help defray expenses for competitions.

COGNETICS
Mrs. Laura Muroski, Advisor

Cognetics is a branch of the Horizons program and is open to any interested student. Students are challenged to reach their full potential through a series of activities. These include participating in skill-building activities for creative problem solving, working “hands on” as a team member, researching the facts, figures, and concepts that make a solution successful, and demonstrating team solutions at Expositions. While much learning takes place through Cognetics, it is also a time for the members to have fun, make new friends, and broaden their horizons.

COMPUTER CLUB
Ms. Rosemary Carnali, Advisor

Computer Club offers interested students the opportunity to utilize the Macintosh computer lab for a variety of activities, including word processing, graphic arts, desktop publishing and multi-media projects. The use of the internet for research purposes will also be explored. The advisor will assist students in the usage of the school's software and equipment. Club members will help with school projects.

DRAMA CLUB
Miss Liana Rozsa/Mrs. Rebecca Nugent, Advisors

Drama Club is composed of 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in performing on stage or helping behind the scenes. Students must audition for the acting parts. Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays once or twice each week. There may be times when we will need to practice later than 3:20, necessitating parents to arrange transportation home for their children. This year we will be performing in the Spring for an audience of parents and students.

FORENSICS CLUB
Currently no advisor

Forensics is a club which nurtures students' verbal-linguistic skills. Children practice monologues, scenes and debate, which they will have the opportunity to showcase at local tournaments.

FUTURE EDUCATORS CLUB
Miss Cristy DeMarino, Advisor

The objective of the Future Educators Club is to show students that we are all potential educators; we all have something to teach and to give to others. Emphasis is placed on tolerance and understanding of our diverse student body. The various activities of this club represent this philosophy. Activities are designed to develop awareness and understanding of individual differences and to promote within all students a shared sense of school membership. One such activity is our coordination and involvement in "Mix It Up Day" each November.

This year our students will be meeting periodically with members of the high school Diversity Club to participate in Study Circles, which address issues of tolerance and understanding. We will also help Team Blue Buck promote a positive school atmosphere.

Some of our other activities have included fund raisers where all proceeds benefited the Washington Food Pantry. We have helped environmental organizations through the sale of Human-i-Tees T-shirts. We are also active in supporting the Ronald McDonald House’s “Share-a-Night” campaign.

The club meets every Thursday from 2:30--3:20 P.M. in room 128. We are always in need of helping hands and new ideas!
