IDENTIFICATION

 The identification process:

    Teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, students and parents may nominate students who exhibit the potential for developing academically and/or artistically. The nomination starts the process. People who nominate should write a paragraph or two on the behaviors and talents of the student.

    Once these are received, a matrix is completed with the data that is located in the student's file. (A copy is enclosed on the next page.) The student is then asked to take a portion of the Torrance test of creativity. An interview is conducted with the Coordinator and a written sample which denotes a student's depth of thought, creativity, and written language skills is assigned. This essay is graded holistically, if the student scores a for or lower, they are counseled and asked to redo their work. This data is reviewed by the Coordinator and English faculty. Students selected are sent a letter of acceptance. Students not selected the first time can ask their folders be reviewed in another year.

    Each spring, a letter is sent to the G/T Coordinators from our sending districts asking for the names of their sixth grade gifted/talented students. Each student and their parents are sent a letter inviting them to become a member of the Horizons program. Each fall, the Coordinator receives a list of the new students to our district from the guidance department. These students are screened to invite students who were identified in previous schools, or meet the criteria for Horizons. The Warren Hills Regional School District's policy is to accept all students who have been in a gifted program. We do meet special needs.

    Once a student is "identified", participation in the program's activities is a the discretion of parent(s) and student. A student can participate in all or any of his/her Warren Hills career.

Criteria for General Intellectual Ability

*Achievements tests: 90% or above in reading, math, and language arts (one can as low as 86)
*A written sample which denotes a student's depth of thought , creativity, and written language skills    that are assessed at above grade level (Holistically scored, 5 or 6 accepted).
*A portion of the Torrance test of creativity.
*An interview which exhibits depths of thought.
