9275 Health 7
A variety of important topics are addressed in seventh grade health. A nutrition unit will teach students how to utilize the food pyramid and dietary guidelines, plan healthy meals, interpret food labels and avoid eating disorders. Units on HIV/AIDS and Lyme Disease will teach ways the diseases are contracted, symptoms, preventive measures and treatments. Instruction will be given on peer pressure, behavior risks, wellness, and the various systems of the body. A substance abuse unit will provide information on alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants and over the counter drugs.


9284, 9285 Health 8
The eighth grade health curriculum includes instruction on substance abuse, emotions and mental health, coping skills, community health resources and personal skills. A comprehensive family life unit is also taught. Family life education addresses the subjects of gender roles, human growth and development, male and female reproductive systems, reproductive health, interpersonal relationships, sexual behavior and responsibility, abstinence, contraception, pregnancy, childbirth, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and infections. An alternative course is also offered for students whose parents do not want them to take the Family Life unit. .

9290 Alternative Health 8
An alternative course to Family Life Education is offered. Instruction includes the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, cardiovascular disease, the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, the nature of cancer, treatment methods, and prevention. The significance of our changing lifestyle, increased leisure time, and stress in relation to degenerative diseases is discussed. Violence causes, prevention and ways of protecting oneself will be taught. Substantial time will be devoted to substance abuse education. This unit will focus on types of drugs and their effects on the individual as well as his/her family. A major objective will be to teach drug refusal skills, based on knowledge of the effects and damages that can occur. Decision making, communication skills, stress management techniques, aging, and death and dying will also be units of learning in this class.

9270, 9280 Physical Education 7 -8
Instruction involves a variety of activities. Emphasis is on the student acquiring proficiency in the elementary skills, rules and strategies of team sports as well as knowledge and understanding of the components of fitness. Throughout the year, fitness is integrated into activities and units. The major areas of emphasis include:

Aerobics: learn how to evaluate heart rate after different levels of exercise, enhance cardiovascular fitness through low impact aerobics and circuit training, and compose through cooperative learning an original, group, aerobic routine to music.
Basketball: elementary skills, rules and strategies, scoring, basic offense and defense, basketball court nomenclature, safety factors, and player positions and responsibilities.
Flag Football: elementary skills, rules, strategies, basic offense and defense, playing field nomenclature, safety factors, and player positions and responsibilities.
Mass Games: participation in various mass games and relays; safety factors are stressed.
New Games: The New Games unit is designed around the idea of working cooperatively rather than competitively through team building. The activities are designed to promote teamwork and enhance the social skills needed to accomplish goals. Team building will give each student the joy of individual success, but reinforce the idea of group accomplishment of a task by helping and depending upon other students.
Physical Fitness Tests: Testing events are curl-ups, sit and reach, twelve minute run/walk, flexed arm hang, and shuttle run.
Soccer: elementary skills, rules, strategies, basic offense and defense, playing field nomenclature, safety factors, and player positions and responsibilities.
Softball: elementary skills, rules, player positions and basic responsibilities, basic terminology, and safety factors.
Track: proper starts and proper running form, rules governing sprint races and team scoring. Events include 50 yard, 75 yard, 100 yard, 220 yard sprint, 440 yard run, 880 yard run, and the mile.
Volleyball: elementary skills, rules, basic offensive and defensive strategies, scoring, playing court nomenclature, safety factors, and player positions.

9295 Developmental Physical Education (grades 7-8)

The developmental physical education program has been designed for students who may have special needs in the area of physical education. Assisting students to realize their full physical potential in spite of health, physical, social or emotional problems is the main goal of this course. Activities are geared to help the students experience success and to enhance their self-esteem. Students are selected for this program by teacher or doctor recommendation.
