Department of Language Arts  *

1465 Computer Assisted Instruction (half year grade 7)
This course is required of all 7th grade students. It is designed to close any curricular achievement gaps existing in basic skills proficiencies among our incoming students. One half of the year will be devoted to skills associated with language arts literacy, while the other half-year will be dedicated to mathematics skills. Students will be offered the opportunity to test out of Computer Assisted Instruction. Information on this option will be available during scheduling.

1380 Language Arts Literacy 7
Language Arts Literacy is an integrated, balanced literacy program designed to address the five New Jersey Core Curriculum Content standards for Language Arts: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Viewing. Language arts classes meet every day, two days in a double period, two days in a single period. Each marking period focuses on a particular type of text (e.g. narrative, persuasive, etc.) and lesson activities are designed to target all core standards. NJ ASK7 skills are specifically addressed in class instruction.

1390 Language Arts Literacy 8
Language Arts Literacy 8 is an integrated, balanced literacy program designed to address the five New Jersey Core Curriculum Content standards for Language Arts: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Viewing. Language Arts Literacy 8 builds upon skills acquired in previous language arts classes. The level of reading and writing independence is expected to increase with each year a student is enrolled. Language arts classes meet every day, two days in a double period, two days in a single period. Each marking period focuses on a particular type of text (e.g. narrative, persuasive, etc. ) and all lesson activities are designed to target all core standards, as well as prepare students for the high school English program NJ ASK8 skills are specifically addressed in class instruction.

1385 Reinforcement Language Arts Literacy 7 & 1395 Reinforcement Language Arts Literacy 8
Reinforcement Language Arts Literacy 7 or 8 is for students who have been identified by the district's screening process with reading deficiencies. Intensive skill development is undertaken with the goal of increasing students’ achievement to grade level. Language arts classes meet every day, two days in a double period, two days in a single period. Each marking period focuses on a particular type of text (e.g. narrative, persuasive, etc.) and lesson activities are designed to target all core standards. NJ ASK7&8 skills are specifically addressed in class instruction.

The Language Arts Department does not condone or permit the use of commercial study guides, nor the use of Internet sources without the specific permission of the teacher. Students found guilty of plagiarism will be dealt with severely (zero on assignment, meeting with principal, parent notification).

SUMMER READING FOR THE LANGUAGE ARTS DEPARTMENT

The Warren Hills Regional School District believes the development of critical reading skills is a crucial ingredient to future success. To encourage lifelong learning and to support academic skills, we have instituted summer reading requirements for all incoming eighth grade students.

Summer reading selections are reviewed annually and will be published Spring 2008. Lists will be distributed to students in Language Arts Literacy classes. All lists and directions will be posted on the district website.
