    1.  Sentence must have action verb.

    2.  Cross out all prepositional phrases.

    3.  Look for a noun or pronoun.

    4.  The direct object answers What? or Whom?

                            Example:  Sarah threw the ball (to Amy).

    Rules for Finding Indirect Objects

    1.  Sentence must have an action verb.

    2.  Cross out all prepositional phrases.

    3.  Look for a noun or pronoun.

    4.  The noun or pronoun must be between the verb and direct object.

    5.  The indirect object answers to What?, For What?, To Whom?, or For Whom?

                    Example:  Sarah threw Amy the ball (after school).

                                   

    Rules for Subject Complement

    1.  Sentence must have a linking verb.

    2.  Cross out all prepositional phrases.

    3.  Look for a noun, pronoun or adjective.

    4.  The subject complement renames or describes the subject.
